Penn State scored in the 88th minute to pull out a 1-0 victory over the Gophers in the first round of the Big Ten women’s soccer tournament on Friday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Mieke Schiemann’s goal advanced the No. 10-seeded Nittany Lions to the quarterfinals. The Nittany Lions (12-5-3) will play No. 2 seed UCLA on Monday. In the first game on Friday, ninth-seeded Ohio State defeated No. 8 seed Wisconsin to advance. The Buckeyes will play top-seeded USC on Monday.

The loss was the first home loss of the season for the seventh-seeded Gophers (12-4-3).

The goal by Schiemann was her fourth of the season. Penn State had edged the Gophers 3-2 on Oct. 13 in University Park, Pa. The winning goal in that match came with eight minutes remaining.

Earlier on Friday, the Big Ten Conference announced that Gophers forward Khyah Harper was named the Big Ten Forward of the Year.

Harper led the nation in points per game (2.22) and total points (40) in the regular season. She was second in goals scored (17) and goals per game (0.94).

Gophers midfielder Sophia Boman joined Harper on the All-Big Ten first team.
