On Sarah Chapelle’s vanity, there’s an empty, dusty (by her own admission) bottle of Taylor Swift Wonderstruck perfume. Gold-capped and festooned with charms, it’s a shade of lavender those in the know would immediately recognize as “Speak Now purple.”

This fragrance is an invisible string, so to speak, connecting two things that happened on Oct. 13, 2011. Swift attended a launch event at Macy’s to promote the scent, the first of five she’d make with Elizabeth Arden, and Chapelle, then a journalism student, started a blog to write about the Tracy Reese dress, Miu Miu peep toe heels and House of Lavande earrings Swift wore to do so.
