Attend a “Labyrinth”-inspired costume ball, and more things to do in Denver

Jump, magic, jump!

Friday-Saturday. David Bowie’s turn as the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s 1986 movie “Labyrinth” sowed a decades-long love for the bizzaro modern fairy tale, as well as Bowie’s own, typically ostentatious style in the film (ahem, that codpiece). Now his character gets its own event with this weekend’s The Masque of the Goblin King. The “Labyrinth”-inspired ball is also an album release, produced by Amber Blais and her Starry Night Productions (formerly Rainbow Militia Circus) and Denver band The Whimsy of Things, among others.

The “fantastical evening will combine wild masquerade, immersive world building, circus and an unconventional album release,” Blais wrote. The event, at the Denver Savoy, will also feature a custom mini-labyrinth and a goblin band in addition to The Whimsy of Things. 7 p.m.-midnight Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2700 Arapahoe St. in Denver. Tickets for the 21-and-up party are $45-$220 via ostarrynight.com.

Free concerts for the family

Tuesday. This month marks the 30th year that Cultural Concerts on Colfax has released a schedule of free, family-friendly concerts at the Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9900 E. Colfax Ave. in Aurora. The Tuesday, Oct. 29, kickoff concert comes just before Native American Heritage Month — celebrated in November — with the Seven Falls Indian Dancers and Grupo Huitzilopochtli, according to organizers.

The dance, music and storytelling shows continue through May 2025 with multicultural holidays, Black History Month, and Cinco de Mayo themes. All shows take place noon-1 p.m. Call 303-739-1970 or visit aurorafoxartscenter.org for more.

A real Harvest Hoot

Friday-Sunday. Younger kids can get in on the Halloween fun, sans candy, as the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marisco Campus hosts the colorful Harvest Hoot this weekend. The Friday, Oct. 25-Sunday, Oct. 27, event encourages costumes for its “Monster Carnival games, boo-tiful crafts, meet & greets with live creatures, fang-tastic fun in The Teaching Kitchen, rides on the Rocky Mountain Mini Train ($4) and so much more!” organizers wrote.

Step into the Phantom’s Lair

Through Halloween. Haunted houses and corn mazes require a bit of exploration, but you jump right into the haunted environment at The Phantom’s Lair, a 70-minute immersive experience that mixes socializing, storytelling and spooky scenery with photo ops — along with “Halloween-themed charcuterie, a ghoulish dessert and 3 spirit-free drinks,” organizers wrote.

Shows take place at 10639 E Briarwood Ave. in Centennial. Seatings are at 5 and 7 p.m., through Thursday, Oct. 31. Note: Strobe lights, smoke machines and other special effects will be used. (The rest is supposed to be a surprise.) Get tickets, $55, and more information about the event at thephantomslair.com.
